About

LixiLab is a grassroot, feasible solution joining science and design to develop hands-on practical strategies along with farmers’ knowledge and tools. It is an accessible bioremediation technology that uses dead bacteria to extract heavy metals generated by leachate filtration in water and agricultural soils. LixiLab was co-designed with Colombian farmers that have been affected by soil contamination.

LixiLab’s mission is to make toxic-free crops possible, reducing the risk of diseases and increasing the well-being of farming communities and consumers; and seeks to ensure access to improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture by creating more fertile lands, reducing crop losses and soil degradation to guarantee the ecosystem’s biodiversity.

The project was awarded the Outstanding Field Research prize at Biodesign Challenge 2021. LixiLab won the second prize in Cumulus Green 2022: Nurturing Our Planet international student competition.
